Day 39

Roofing guys putting on the metal roof!
Getting the trim on and staying ahead of the roofing guys.
 Beautiful dark green metal roof.
Lots of staging needed to get up in the air up there!

Jon's comment: "Today was one of the most rewarding days of this whole construction process." The roof is going on; CMP is finally coming tomorrow to replace the pole and put in our service; the exterior trim is almost done; the heating and plumbing guy is getting us a plan for the radiant heat in the second floor; the weather cooperated. It was overall a good day for the Carriage house. However, I made an emergency trip to Rockland to take Hope to the vet. Turns out she has a UTI. But $250.00 later, she has a shot of penicillin and a 10 day supply of antibiotics to clear up the problem.

Day 38

Snowing today! Jon and Ken worked half of the day yesterday and got more of the trim boards up. Today Jon is inside the Carriage house painting the rest of the trim before it goes up. The cold weather is keeping us from getting more accomplished, but at least the place is closed in. Still waiting for CMP to come set the new pole and put in our electrical service. It's very frustrating because the ground is freezing up. Jon has most of the ditch dug for the underground lines but he still has twenty feet or so to go once CMP is finished. Then, filling the ditch back in again will not be easy either with rock hard dirt. Let's hope we get a bit of a warm up. The plumber is coming Sunday to lay out the radiant heating for the second floor. More pictures when there's more to show. Right now the work that is being done isn't markedly noticeable.

Day 37

Back from Florida (sigh) and back to cold weather ( It was 87 degrees when we landed last Wednesday). Back to work on the Carriage house today. Winds were so intense that work took place inside: putting the cupola together and painting the trim boards before they go up. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving but Jon and Ken will put in a half day, and the roofers will begin putting the metal roofing in place. As for me, I am headed to the boy's house to help cook Thanksgiving dinner.

Day 36

The sliding glass doors are in.
East side of the house now has windows.
Even though you can't see it, there is a garage door there.
View from the back.

Kitchen and floors

Yesterday, I ordered the kitchen. Today, we bought all the laminate flooring for the carriage house. Tomorrow we take advantage of a rebate deal on insulation.  The metal roofing company came in with a reasonable estimate so it seems we are moving forward in a timely fashion. Very exciting!

Day 36

The roof is on! And, the front window is in. Note the hay hoist complete with pulley.

Finishing up the back side. The guy way up on the top (barely visible) is Jon.
 Typar is partially on.

We leave for Florida on Wednesday. A working vacation for me; I am presenting at two conferences. For Jon, it's a chance to get away and visit Ralph.

Veteran's Day 2010: My favorite veteran and his sidekick, Hope.

The picture was taken in September when we were just beginning the Carriage house, but I like this picture of Jon. He just looks so content. It's been forty-two years since he served in Vietnam; he deserves to be content.

Day 35

Sunset. Note the distant Western mountains.
Oh yeah! The roof is almost done!
Another view of the front of the carriage house. This side of the roof is completed; tomorrow the back side gets finished.

Day 34

Hard to see but the roof is almost finished.
 Front view of construction,
Back view.

Back to construction

After a wonderful four days in D.C., we came back to a rain storm. Liberty Farm is pretty soggy right now. No work yesterday but today Jon and Ken are back at it with some help from Carl. Here are a few pictures from our D.C.  trip.

Day 33 - Tuesday 11.2

The roof is the hardest part but Jon and Ken are getting it done. More help coming next week when we return from D.C.

Day 32

Dumb camera decided not to work tonight, probably needs charging, so no pictures. Some roof sheathing went on today. Waiting for another delivery from the lumber company. Only two days of work this week as Jon and I are headed to Washington DC for a much needed four days of vacation. Monday, back at it and working to be in the Carriage House by Christmas.
